During the darkness of two March and five April nights in 1941,the centres of Plymouth and Devonport were almost obliterated.In just seven nights of just one year the very heart of Plymouth was laid to ruin.many civic and commercial buildings were destroyed.Bedford Street, George Street,Frankfort Street and Fore Street were just lines amid piles of rubble. But the book is not about those dreadful war years. lthough a lot of buildings were destroyed,a great many remained intact or at least were capable of repair.During the final years of the 1940s and the whole of the decade that followed,buildings were relentlessly demolished in dogmatic persuance of the "Plan for Plymouth".
