About This Item
AMS, 1970. Reprint. Hardcover. As New. AMS, 1970. Book. As New. Reprint. 1970 AMS Press reprint of 1906 Lippincott edition. Not ex-library, not a remainder, almost like new. Green cloth boards, gilt titles on spine. Edgar Evertson Saltus (1855-1921) is now remembered mostly for his lurid histories of Imperial Rome and Tsarist Russia, but in his day he was a leading America exponent of European decadence. He was the first American to write e book on Schopenhauer; he knew the French Symboliste poets personally, and was a friend of Oscar Wilde. His under-rated novels are finely written, providing a light-decadent picture of New York high society around the turn of the century.
