Born in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, he grew up in a Cossack family, which influenced many of his works. Surikov moved to Moscow and studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He is best known for his large-scale historical canvases, such as "The Morning of the Streltsy Execution" and "Boyarina Morozova." These works are celebrated for their dramatic portrayal of key moments in Russian history and their intricate attention to detail. Surikov was a member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers), a group of Russian realist artists who sought to engage directly with the public. His legacy lies in his ability to vividly capture and dramatize historical events, making him one of the foremost historical painters in Russian art.
