Also known as The Devils or The Demons, and originally published in 1871-2, this is the violent and bloody tale of the sinister hero Stavrogin, a powerful example of Dostoevsky's 'great sinner who has lost his faith.' The novel follows the strange life of Nikolay Stavrogin, a brilliant and attractive but sterile & nihilistic man, with a parallel plot line tracing the revolutionary movement in Russia. Dostoevsky, 1821-1881, was one of the most… Read More

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1853. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [vi]vii-xvi [1]2-624. FIRST EDITION. Bound in light brown half leather over marbled boards, all edges trimmed. The novel was first published as a serial between March 1852 and September 1853. The first edition after the serial. Dickens uses this novel to satirize the British judicial system. Though the legal profession criticized Dickens' satire as exaggerated, this novel helped support a judicial reform movement, which culminated in the enactment of legal reform in the 1870s. This is a very good, or better, copy of the first edition. Dickens' novel of the British judicial system. Considered by many to be his best work.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
