Venezia : Giuseppe Antonelli, 1833. ~TITLE CONTINUES: e con Annotazioni Dichiarato Antonio Martini ~DATE RANGE: 1829-33 ~Nineteenth-century half dark green crushed morocco, marbled paper in Italian over Spanish pattern to boards. Gilt ruling, lettering, and decor to spines. All edges speckled red, faded. Mild wear to boards and board edges. Frontis engraving of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments to vol. I. Small 8vos (10 x 16cm). A little foxing and age-browning. Hinges sound. Endpapers uncracked over gutters except rear endpaper of vol. XXIV. A small amount of worm damage to front endpapers of vols I & II at gutters, and to vols XIV, XXII, & XXVI from front endpage through to early pages (in XIV only with minor loss to text - a few letters). Index to rear of vol. XXVI. Text printed in double columns throughout (parallel Latin and Italian). Antonio Martini (1720-1809), Biblical scholar and archbishop of Florence. His translation of the Bible into Italian, first published in 1769 to 1771 (New Testament) and 1776 to 1781 (Old Testament), was formally approved by the papacy and remained in common use for the following two centuries.
