London & New York: John Tallis & Company, 1851. Other. 245 by 327mm (9¾ by 12¾ inches).. Steel engraving, hand colored in outline and wash. The fine engraved map is showing Venezuela, New Granada, Equador and the Guayanas. The map is decorated with four finely hand colored engraved vignettes: the waterfall of Bagota, the mountain Chimorazo in Equador, a view of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname and some animals. The actual map was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. The illustrations were engraved by various artists: R. Radclyffe, W. Lacy, J. Rogers, J. H. Kernot, J. B. Allen, T. Fleming, H. Winkles, R. Baker after drawings by H. Warren, H. Winkles and H. Wray. In excellent condition.

The London Printing and Publishing Company, [1851-1856].. Original steel engraved map with three vignette illustrations. Decorative scrolling and title cartouche around the edges of the image. (Map 22 x 29.5 cm, overall sheet 27.5 x 36 cm). Original outline colour. Centrefold crease as issued. Very good condition. For the Great Exhibition in 1851 John Tallis (1817-1876) worked with engraver John Rapkin (1815-1876) to publish the 'Illustrated World Atlas', whose maps were later re-issued by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Their maps are prized for their wonderful steel-engraved vignettes showing the peoples, customs, architecture, landmarks, flora, and fauna of each country.
