Amsterdam: Claes Jansz Visscher. unbound. very good. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 8.5" x 17.5", sheet measures 15" x 17.5". Some toning but otherwise in good condition

The Battle in the Bay of Matanzas was a naval battle during the Eighty Years' War in which a Dutch squadron was able to defeat and capture a Spanish treasure fleet on September 7-8, 1628. Dutch forces under the command of Admiral Piet Hein captured 16 Spanish ships and commandeered an incredible bounty of gold, silver, and expensive trade goods without bloodshed. Here, Hein is portrayed in an inset at upper left ("Genereal Pieter Pietrersz Hayn"). Opposite at upper right is an inset showing Admiral Hendrick Lonck ("Admirael Hendrick Cornelisz Lonq"). At bottom, an inset shows a detailed map of Cuba under the title "T Eylant Cuba Met Syne Gelegentheyt", that shows Jamaica ("Iamayca") and the western-most tip of Haiti ("Spanola"). Hard to find. Claes Visscher (1587-1652) was the founder of the family business of engravers and publishers based in Amsterdam. Nicolaes I (1618-1679) worked with his Father and continued the business. His son Nicolaes Jansz. II inherited the business with his wife Elizabeth Visscher who ran it on her own for more than 20 years after his death. Hard to find.
