About This Item

[LGBTQ pulp] Renault, Mary. The Middle Mist. New York: Avon Books, Hearst corporation, 1945. First edition mass-market paperback softcover. 256 pages. Measures 4.25" x 7". Very vintage cover art features two women in the foreground, with a series of illustrated backdrops behind them. Tagline reads: "A provocative story of modern life as she probes the delicate relationship between two attractive young women." Renault was one of few authors writing lesbian fiction at the time while being openly lesbian. She moved to South Africa with her partner Julie Mullard, which allowed her to write about openly gay characters without fearing the censorship of England. Later in life she wrote historical fiction which brought her bigger attention.
Author Suzanne Collins cited Renault as a main source of inspiration when she was writing The Hunger Games. Another big fan was president John F. Kennedy, who once said during an interview that his favorite author was Mary Renault. Very clean cover with green-tinted fore-edge, slight foxing around the front cover, overall in very good condition.
