About This Item

Milano: Tipografia Guglielmini (on cover: Giuseppe Marghieri), 1858. First edition. Very Good. 22 cm; xxiii, 550 pages. Original printed wraps. Unopened. Joints reinforced, wrapper edges guarded. Pages lightly toned. Preserved in custom-built clamshell box.

First printing of the posthumous papers of the progressive journalist turned conservative romantic, Alessandro Verri, co-editor of "Il Caffè," chronicling the turbulent end of the 18th century. A lifelong exponent of the Enlightenment, Verri, in his last years, soured into a vituperative conservative angry over the collapse of authority. A 19th-century rarity in original wraps!

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
