About This Item
This is the first volume of the gardening publication "Vick's Illustrated Monthly Magazine." Volume 1, No. 1 containing 12 issues, January - December, 1878. The issues are wonderfully illustrated with color chromolithograph frontispieces (with tissue guards), a masthead, and numerous in-text drawings. (Note - the August issue is missing its color frontispiece). Published by James Vick in Rochester, New York. "Vick's" appealed to both amateur and master Victorian gardeners. Contents include species of plants (both domestic and overseas), garden layouts, flower arrangements, poetry, reader letters, gardening techniques, garden tools, etc. There is an Index at the front.
Here are examples of the contents: Apples; Cabbage Caterpillar; Hanging Baskets; Table Bouquets; Sugar Beets; Autumn Work; Potato Bugs; Budding; Asparagus; Botany for Little Folks; Annuals; Bird Destroyers; Floral Exhibitions; Hot-beds; Drying Plants; Farmer's Garden; Heat and Flowers; Legend of the Forget-Me-Not; Cauliflower; Rhododendron; Moles; Lawns; Plants for Shade; Vases; Trees in America and England; Window Boxes; Wallflowers in Paris; Poison Vines; Turnips; Vegetable Gardening...and much more.
Condition:
Clean covers and spine. Tiny cloth tear at the bottom-left corner of the back cover. The left and right edges of the spine each have a tiny cloth tear at three equal intervals, presumably at the strings. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is an insignificant crack at the rear hinge between the end paper and pastedown (despite the crack, the back cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky). Nice interior - the pages are clean with only a small stain at the outer margin of pages 126 to about 156 (the stain is small to begin with, then gets gradually smaller and smaller until it disappears). Light foxing to a blank front end paper. The front end paper is lightly tanned. It appears one blank rear end paper has been removed. The frontispiece chromolithograph for August is not present. Overall the book is in Good condition.
