About This Item
This is an antique copy of the gardening publication "Vick's Illustrated Monthly Magazine." Volume III, containing 12 issues, January - December, 1880. The issues are wonderfully illustrated with color chromolithograph frontispieces (with tissue guards), a masthead, and numerous in-text drawings. (Note - the January and July issues are missing their color frontispiece). Published by James Vick in Rochester, New York. "Vick's" appealed to both amateur and master Victorian gardeners. Contents include species of plants (both domestic and overseas), garden layouts, flower arrangements, poetry, reader letters, gardening techniques, garden tools, etc. There is an Index at the front.
Here are examples of the contents: Autumn Berries; Gold-fish Aquarium; Balsams; Manure for Bulbs; The First Summer Bouquet; Pink-fleshed Apples; Children and Flowers; Hydrangea and Tea Plants; Showy-colored Foliage; The too-busy Gardener; Ornamental Fence and Gate; Dahlia and Gladiolus; Crab Grass; Ivy; Plan of Lawn; Melon Culture; Peanuts; About Roses; Strange Scenery and Plants; Winter Tomatoes; Tree Planting; Effect of Continuous Sunlight, Sweet Corn; Tulips; Thyme...and much more.
Condition:
Light stain at the top-right quadrant of the front cover; the bottom-right corner of the back cover has a small, white stain. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge between page viii and page 1 (despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky). Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only an occasional light foxing spot here and there; a thin, light stain appears at the outer page edges at the end of the book (from approximately the beginning of the September issue through to the end of the December issue). Two months, January and July, are missing there color frontispiece plate. A slip of paper with an old name/address written in pencil has been tipped-in at the front before the title page. Overall the book is in Good condition.
