About This Item

Victor Hugo: His Life and Work by G. Barnett Smith Hardback, 1885, first edition, scarce, published by Ward and Downey, London, 324 pages + viii and 3-page publisher catalogue at rear. Octavo/8vo, measures around 7 3/4" by 5 1/2" by 1 1/4". Dark blue cloth binding, gilt edging to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Slight discolouration to spine but colour largely retained and quite vivid on boards, though some scuffing and light marking, but quite clean. Book has forward tilt. Clear signs of shelf-wear, bumped and slightly torn corners. Cracking to inner hinges, especially front one, slackness to binding though textblock holding together reasonably firmly. Page edges cut reasonably neatly and deckled. Edges also browned and scuffed. Previous owner bookplate to front pastedown. Frontispiece of the subject. Page surfaces quite clean, the odd mark but no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information.
