This volume, the first to be published dealing with the East Riding, is entirely devoted to the City of Kingston upon Hull. Established as a 'new town' in the twelfth century, Hull has ever since been one of the leading ports in the kingdom, and particular attention is given here to its trade, shipping, and commerce. The Baltic trade gives a distinctive flavour to this story, which is diversified by whaling and by the still important deep-sea fishing. The development of the docks is examined in detail, and there are accounts of the Hull Trinity House and of some outstanding surviving buildings, including a number of warehouses.
