Each campaign is written by a different contributor and concludes with a section of references. * From the jacket flap, ""This volume has been written in the conviction that much of interest remains to be said about the small campaigns and expeditions from which the British Empire was seldom free during Victoria's long reign. Certainly there have been many detailed accounts of these minor wars, notably in Sir John Forescue's monumental ""History of the British Army,"" but none of them was definitive. The range of sources consulted was often narrow; imperialist assumptions imposed their own limitations; and, above all, the professional military chronicler was seldom concerned to place the wars in their political context.. . . .[ This volume] comprises a detailed study from original sources of seven British campaigns undertaken between 1845 and 1899, While each contributor has been free to develop the aspects of his campaign which seemed to him most interesting or significant, they all have been primarily concerned to put the military events into the broad political picture. How and why did particular wars occur, and how firmly were they controlled politically? What degree of military competence was shown in their execution, and how effective were they as ""instruments of policy""? These are some of the questions the contributors attempt to ask."" See photo of rear dust jacket for list of the campaigns, the year they took place, and the contributor who writes of it.
