Contemporary full calf, spine richly gilt, with red label, boards with gilt frames, all edges marbled. Bookseller’s label on front board inside. Presentation on half title. The plate designated to be bound at p. 124 is bound-in before the title. Jaques Bénigne Bossuet (1624-1704), French priest, philosopher, theologian and author. He wrote two famous works for the crown prince whom he tutored, one on general history and one political-theological. He fought protestantism, but at the same time he marked the independence of the French church towards Rome. Antoine Caillot (1757-1830), French author, mainy of books on history and travel.
