Full contemporary vellum, gilt ornamented spine, gilt & red morocco spine labels, gilt outer dentelles, marbled endpapers (very minor rubbing, slight bumping to couple corners, occasional interior foxing) still a VG bright copy, from the library of Thomas Coxhead Chisenhale Marsh (1811-1875) & William Swaine Chisenhale Marsh (1857-1929), of Gaynes Park, w/ bookplate containing both the horse head erased & Griffin passant & chained crests. First edition of this expansive and lavishly illustrated history of the religious and military orders in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Included are sections on feudalism, war, armies, navies, the crusades, chivalry, tourneys, military orders, the Papacy, religious orders, the Inquisition, and more.
