Nice condition antique copy of "Views A-Foot" - Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff by Bayard Taylor. Circa 1890's (there is no date of publication stated, but there is an inscription dated 1896 on the front end paper); David McKay; Philadelphia. The book features numerous full-page illustrated plates (most are photographs) - each illustration has a tissue guard over it, on which is printed a description of the image. With gilt top page edges, a ribbon page marker and decorative end papers. The book chronicles Taylor's travels to places such as Ireland, London, Belgium, the Danube, the Austrian Alps, Switzerland, the Black Forest, Rome, Paris (and many more) - "at a cost of only five hundred dollars, and this sum earned on the road."
Condition:
Clean covers with sharp corners; bright gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The text pages are in excellent condition - clean with no stains or foxing found; 1.5" tear at the outer edge of page 255. There is an inscription written in pen dated 1896 on the front end paper and a name written in pen at the center of the title page that has mostly been erased...no other writing found. Overall the book is in very good condition.
