About This Item
Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1964. First American Edition. First printing. Octavo; cloth hardcover; dustjacket; xv,223pp. Copy of prominent latino scholar, author and educator Roberto Márquez, with his ownership signature on half-title. Tight, Near Fine, unmarked copy in the original dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $5.95 on front flap), mildly spine-sunned, lightly soiled, Very Good+. First title in the publisher's series "Contemporary Latin American Classics."
First "authorized translation" of the Ecuadorian author's highly acclaimed first novel, a radical indictment and realistic portrayal of the South American "latifundista" system and the exploitation of indigenous Ecuadorians at the hands of ruling elites. First published in 1934, a full English-language translation did not appear until 1962, though that version did not meet with the author's approval, prompting the current new translation which was done with Icaza's collaboration. With an introduction by the translator and a foreword by J. Cary Davis, series editor.
