About This Item

[Fashion] Original illustrations of vintage early to mid-century, women's fashion. Vintage Fashion Archive of 6 original Gouache Watercolor Paintings and Sketches. This archive includes 6 Vintage Fashion Sketches, circa 1920's-1950's. Each ranges from 10" x 7" to 10" x 15". Six paintings on hard mats, one on thick watercolor paper. All sketched in pencil and various colors of gouache paint. These illustrations provide a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles women aspired to in these eras. Two large paintings dated "4/11/54" captures detailing accounts of posh 1950's attire. The model boasts a matching rose-hued set, comprised of a slim pencil skirt and corseted blazer. The artist, "Virginia", meticulously details accents on the blazer's arms and its rear. The blazer illustrated is an ode to the 1930's, as "the exaggerated shoulder-on suits and dresses-was a hallmark of 1930s fashion achieved through padding, layers of fabric, and other embellishments". They also illustrate elegant gloves and a face-net draping from a small cloche hat, decorated with a feather. In another sketch, the artist sketches three women dressed in draped long-sleeve dressed, all synched at the waist by a statement belt. The artist details the draping of the coats and dresses by faint shadowing, alternating between darker and light shades of black and gray. The women illustrated capture the androgynous influences in fashion that pervaded the 20's and 30's. Another 1920's sketch illustrates a woman in a long black gown, extravagant fur coat, head dress, and a elongated cigarette holder. The artist also details the bold floral earrings, and utilizes various shades of black, gray, and accents of white to create texture. One sketch illuminates a portrait of a woman boasting a statement floral headpiece, bow neck piece, and bold red lip. In another sketch by "G. Wichner", the model sports a long black plunge gown, decorated with a floral halter neckline. The model also sports a long 1920's style evening cape, matching the color of her gown. By use of faint blue hues, the artists meticulously elongates and illuminates the figure of the model. Several sketches bear original artist's initials or name. Expressive accounts of vintage early to mid-century women's fashion, in very good condition overall.
