About This Item
New York : Carl Fischer, 1885 Bound in olive colored cloth with gilt and black decorations, 366 pp. This copy with six [of seven] "illustrations" and 196 woodcuts. What seems to separate this copy from the others listed by this publisher is that the first three "illustrations" are mounted photos, one of the author and two of a violin made by Andreas Amati. Illustration three is a large fold out tracing of the outside mould and accessories of a Stradivarius violin which, while complete is detached and splitting at the folds. Illustation four is missing. Laid in is a period broadside by Ernest Kohler & Son of Edinburgh, one side of which is "Tools for Violin Makers and is illustrated. The reverse side is Violin Wood and Fittings. This copy is slightly shaken and has chips at the spin extremities. Also, there is offsetting from the tissue guard between the frontis and title page. Still a pleasant copy with mounted photos over plain illustrations.
