These two volumes are in poor condition. Volumes I spine is heavily chipped with most of it missing. Front board is completely detached from binding. Moderately foxed to all edges of textblock. Interior pages have minor staining. Volume II spine is loose from binding but hanging on. Heavy chipping at ends and split at rear gutter. Both hinges are cracked and boards are loose from binding. Moderate foxing to all edges of textblock. Minor staining to interior pages.
The novel tells the story of Henry Esmond's twin grandsons, Virginia-born George and Henry Warrington. Henry's romantic entanglement with an older woman leads to his volunteering in the British army and fighting under the command of General Wolfe at the 1759 capture of Quebec.
