About This Item

Dublin: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1965 Illustrated by Edward Pagram. First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine lettered in back, bookplate to front pastedown. A fine copy; in an unclipped dust jacket with some mild soiling and slight rubbing, else fine. Anthony Burgess' A Vision of Battlements, written in 1949 and published in 1965, was his first novel. Burgess wrote the book as a way to process his military service in Gibraltar, saying, "I was empty of music but itching to create. So I wrote this novel ... to see if I could clear my head of the dead weight of Gibraltar." Burgess uses his antihero Richard Ennis to satirize traditional ideas about the heroism of battle and the nobility of soldiers. Much of the character of Richard Ennis is based on Burgess himself. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
