About This Item
London: George Bell and Sons, 1884. New, corrected. hardback. Good, full-leather binding with gilt edging (some rubbing). Front board detached. decoration and spine titling bright, on black panels (ribbed spine x5); marbled pastedowns and edges; pages clean, crisp and unmarked with tight binding. Unread. Rugby School prize - embossed emblem on front and plate glued on front pastedown (presented to C. Headlam who would become a 1st Class Cricketer and travel writer 1872-1934).. 18mo (170 x 100 / 6_"" x 4""). Cary's famous blank verse translation of Dante's Divine Comedy was published at his own expense in 1814 (because his publisher wouldn't risk it after his Inferno failed to sell). This won acclaim, however, especially once Samuel Taylor Coleridge sang its praises during a lecture at the Royal Institution.
