Lord David Cecil presents a study of the problems facing poetic and spirtually-minded artists in an age which was Philistine, materialist and of growing religious doubt; and of how these problems affected their art. It is also an essay in the fine art of biography, that art whose aim is to tell a true story truthfully and at the same time to create a work of literature. The author has chosen portraits drawn largely from hitherto unpublished materials of the two distinguished painters. These studies made their first appearance in lecture form as the Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery, Washington in 1966. Black boards with writing to spine.
