About This Item

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green and Longman, 1837. After five months' residence in Thebes, 'sketching', Hoskins took a side trip with architect [Frederick] Catherwood & Egyptologist [Robert] Hay to the Oasis Magna at El Khargeh (present-day Kharga in southern Egypt; the Libyan Desert is not entirely within Libya) - once an important part of caravan trade between Egypt & Sudan - where he did some more sketching & paper-casting of the sculptures & monuments. Later, some lesser oases in southern Egypt were visited, not without hazard. Includes a brief account of life & general conditions in Egypt and descritions of some other notable oases not actually visited by Hoskins. Hardcover, half brown calf over red marbled boards, red spine label, gilt titling. General wear, front hinge weak with one-inch split at top, head of spine chipped; pencilled name (Wm R Gill 8 March 1886) on flyleaf. Text clean; xvi, 338 pages; 20 elegant lithographed plates from sketches by the author (3 folding, of bas-relief heiroglyphs in the Temple at El Khargeh which Hoskins & Hay uncovered); folding map; transcriptions & translations of Greek inscriptions on the monuments.. First Edition. Half calf. Good. Illus. by Author. 5¾" by 8¾".
