About This Item
[California, Pennsylvania]: [Arthur & Kit Knight], 1981. 5 1/2 inches. [20] pp., photographic image of Holmes's house mounted to page [3]. Original printed wrappers, saddle-stapled. Light dust soiling in wrappers, light wrinkling in second leaf from mounting glue, else fine.
Numbered 141 of 750 copies and signed by the author. Four previously unpublished journal entries reflecting on the death of and three visits by Jack Kerouac to the Old Saybrook, Connecticut, home of the author, John Clellon Holmes (1926-1988), his close friend, known widely as the "quiet Beat" and author of the first Beat novel (GO [1952]). The first visit, "in 1957 occurred seven months before the publication of On the Road. The second entry, 1962, suggests the inroads that 'Beat' notoreity had made on Jack's personal life and character. The third, 1965 portrays something of the autumnal Jack (lonely and played-out) of the last years. The fourth, in 1969, records some of my emotion on hearing of his sudden death" (pp. [6-7]).
Volume 11 of THE UNSPEAKABLE VISIONS OF THE INDIVIDUAL, a series published by Beat Generation scholars and collectors, Arthur and Kit Knight.
