New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed by Spencer on the title page. Near Fine in a Near Fine jacket, unclipped ($3.95), lightly rubbed at the edges, a few small stains. Black and grey buckram on the boards, minimal rubbing at the edges and corners, with white and orange ink lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound, some stains at the top edge, rear endpaper clipped at the top corner. Spencer's novel of law enforcement and racial tensions in a small Southern town. The Pulitzer Prize jury recommended this for the prize, but the board decided to give no award that year.
