Was born in 1891 to a Scottish physician and his wife, on the American Clipper ship Luzon en route to New Zealand. He was taken by his parents to Canada as a boy, graduated in medicine in Prague in 1912, and studied as a personal pupil of the Greek-Russian philosopher Gurdjieff in 1913. A former physician at the Mayo clinic, Dr. Alexander became disenchanted with the limits of modern medicine and traveled around the world in search of healing techniques from other cultures. Around 1938 Dr. Alexander travelled to India and on to Tibet, where he lived and studied with Tibetan lamas, Buddhist monks, Hopi Indians, North African medicine men, and West Indies sorcerers."
