Chicago: Belford, Clarke & Company No date but circa 1880's. In green and red embossed designs and Longfellow in gilt on front cover and same on spine. All gilt page adges. Square and intact binding. Clean and unmarked endpapers. Unmarked text pages. Random foxing. Broken hinge at title page . Signatures are all attached. Bumping and rubbing of ends of spine and corners. Moderate shelf wear. . Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
Synopsis
Longfellow began publishing his poetry in 1839, including the collection Voices of the Night, his debut book of poetry. The bulk of Voices of the Night was translations, though he also included nine original poems and seven poems that he had written as a teenager. Ballads and Other Poems was published in 1841 and included "The Village Blacksmith" and "The Wreck of the Hesperus", which were instantly popular.
