1722 1ed Bacqueville French Voyages America CANADA Iroquois Indians Illustrated
Bacqueville de La Potherie was an early 18th-century French author who is best remembered for his book 'History of North America'. In this book, Bacqueville chronicles each of the famous French expeditions to the Great Lakes region and the southern Mississippi River region of America. According to Sabin,
"This work relates entirely to Canada and the Iroquois Indians; the plates comprise the earliest views taken in Canada".
This first volume is written in the form of letters and is considered the most trustworthy of all the volumes of this work. Per Streeter,
""Bacqueville's account is in the form of letters, one of them describing the Cartier expedition and summarizing the next century and a half… The work contains much on the relations of New France with the English colonies and with the Indians."
It also features impressive full-page engravings of maps, ships reaching the New World, and Native American Indian costumes and canoes.
