Philadelphia: Geo. W. Gorton, 1849. Later Edition. Leather-bound. Good Plus. Contemporary Full calf, with embossed graphic of a raptor atop a shield to front and rear boards, bordered in blind. Gilt decorated spine worn. Rebacked, later headbands, etc.. [xx], pp, 668. Last two leaves separating but still attached. Rear hinge shows mull, but holding well. Browning at edges of margins, and occasional light foxing and/or spotting throughout. 178 in-text engravings on wood. More readable by the layperson than the multi-volume set. "This edition of the Narrative of the Exploring Expedition will be found to contain all the most interest results as well as the exciting scenes of the cruise. I have endeavored to retain all that is interesting to the general reader in Geography and Natural History; also, full descriptions of the places we visited, and of the habits, manners, and customs of the natives." (Charles Wilkes's INTRODUCTION, Washington City, July, 1849).
