Summary: Sailing in 1719 with an expedition to prey on Spanish ships, Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip and proceeded on his own account. On this voyage occurred the incident of the albatross which Coleridge used in his 'Ancient Mariner.' After sailing along the coast of South America, he sailed up to California, where he noticed that the soil might contain gold. Then he crossed over to China from where he returned to England. Arrested on two charges of piracy, he was acquitted and shortly after went to the European continent - a wealthy man.
