About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1956. Hardcover. 8vo. Yellow and green paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 346pp. Very good/very good. Jacket lightly edgeworn (only). Quite tight and attractive second printing of this fiction that became basis for the 1962 same-named drama. On the front flyleaf, the author inscribes and signs boldly in black ink: "For Larry Scheer / with good wishes for the / best of everything in 1958 / from / Nelson Algren." In addition, the rear jacket flap is inscribed and signed in black ink by the noted Chicago photographer whose image of Algren graces the jacket's front panel: "The world's most / neighborly photographer -- / Art Shay." Shay (1922-2018) was a close friend of Algren's and they collaborated on a number of projects; in 1988 Shay's many Algren images resulted in the book "Nelson Algren's Chicago." And as if this isn't enough, this special copy bears a choice autograph addition from the film version: Tipped facing the half-title page is a heavy stock 5" X 3" card signed boldly by actor Ken Lynch, who dates it 21 June 1989 at upper right. Lynch (1910-90) plays Frank Bonito in the film. BRUCCOLI A.6.1.b.
