About This Item

Princeton: Bollingen Series/Princeton University Press, 1974.. First Edition. Quarto. Bound in dark brown cloth over tan boards. 124 pages plus 48 black and white plates (one folding). Title page in black and red. Some small corner bumps and edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped and has some edge wear. A very good copy in like jacket. The three groups of texts in this volume illustrate the various kinds of protection offered to the deceased against the perils of the road while the soul journeys to its rightful place. The first text is The Book of the Two Ways and is concerned with helping the soul to find and follow the two routes (by water and by land) to Rosetan, the gate to the necropolis that gives access to the Netherworld. The texts of the Quererts assist the soul to enter and pass through the twelve caverns of the Netherworld. The third text is a magical aid to winning at draughts, a favorite Egyptian pastime with origins in prehistory.
