About This Item

London: C. Tilt and Simpkin and Co, 1836-7. First edition. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 9.5" by 6.5". William Radclyffe; David Cox; Edward Harding; Thomas Creswick; James Watson; George Cattermole. The first edition of Thomas Roscoe's charming and detailed travel work on Wales in the early nineteenth century, illustrated throughout with many plates. The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. 'South Wales' illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, forty-four plates, and two vignettes. Collated, complete. 'North Wales' illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, forty-seven plates, and two vignettes. Collated, complete. 'South Wales' bound with half-title, 'North Wales' bound without half-title. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear of 'North Wales'. Undated, dated from Jisc from copies held at the British Library. These two works are detailed travel journals, written during the author's long excursions through Wales, with one volume focussing on North Wales, and the other focussing on South Wales. Roscoe offers a unique view on Wales in the early nineteenth century in this work, as the landscape was changing with the end of the Industrial Revolution. Written by Thomas Roscoe, an English author and translator. His other works include 'Gonzalo, the Traitor', 'The King of the Peak', and 'Legends of Venice'. With engravings by William Radclyffe, David Cox, Edward Harding, Thomas Creswick, James Watson, George Cattermole. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Minor marks to the boards and spines. A little fading to the spines. Light rubbing to the joints. A little bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Very Good Indeed
