Stated First Printing 8vo size brown cloth covers with black and gilt title block on spine and black illustration on front cover. 655 pages including index and errata plus two sections of black and white photographs with 77 illustrations, and five in-text maps. Color endpapers are maps. From jacket: "(This) is the definitive account of a bloody and tragic story: the rise of the Zulu Nation under the great ruler Shaka, and its fall under Cetshwayo in the Zulu War of 1879... It was not until 1824 that Europeans came face to face with another expanding and imperial power, the Zulus - the most formidable nation in Black Africa. The confrontation ignited a bitter war... The record of that war is studded with tales of unparalleled drama: the Battle of Isandhlwana... Rourke's Drift...where 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded; the tragic death of ... the son of Napoleon III. Jacket is a bit tattered at edges and head and heel of spine, front inside flap is creased. Bumped head and heel of spine. Jacket has some foxing, including to inside flaps. There is light foxing to endpapers, outside pages and fep, but we did not note foxing within the text, stray pencil mark on page 9. May be a little musty.
