About This Item

Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1963. Hardbound. VG, DJ shows sunning on spine and front, slight wear to edges, book in excellent shape. Blue gray cloth boards w/ orange pictorial DJ, [xvii] 558 pp, 44 BW illustrations. This is "Volume II." The first book is Washington: Village and Capital, 1800-1878. From the jacket--Washington in 1879 was far different from the village that had greeted the first legislators to arrive there in 1800. In the intervening years it had become a flourishing city with a population of over 140,000. In many ways its growth had and would continue to parallel that of the other major American cities; yet its unique position as the capital of a fast-growing, energetic nation gave the city its distinctive characteristics. This volume describes the development of the local community, its citizens and institutions, up through the years following the Second World War.
