About This Item

Surrey: Printed and Published by Leonard and Virgina Woolf, 1923. First British edition, printed by the Woolfs in an edition of ca. 460 copies, from type hand-set by Virginia. 35, [1, blank], [1, ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Blue paper wrappers, printed label with rules above and below text. Spine defective, some fading to boards, scattered foxing. Good. Boxed. First British edition, printed by the Woolfs in an edition of ca. 460 copies, from type hand-set by Virginia. 35, [1, blank], [1, ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Hogarth Press Waste Land. Virginia and Leonard Woolf had published Eliot's Poems (1919) as the fourth book of their Hogarth Press, and they printed the first English edition of The Waste Land, from type set entirely by Virginia (she wrote to a friend on 8 July 1923 that she had completed the task). The book was published in September and sold out less than two years later. Gallup identifies three states of the label, assigning no priority. The blue patterned paper wrappers are fragile, as here. An unsophisticated copy of this landmark of modernist literature. Gallup A6c; Woolmer 28
