London: Adam and Charles Black, Sir Walter Scott. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Various. Ten volumes of the twenty-five volume Victoria Edition set of the Waverly Novels. With an illustrated frontispiece to every volume and an additional plate to volume XII of a ground plan of Kenilworth castle. The volumes included are: Volume VI: Black Dwarf and Montrose Volume XII: Kenilworth Volume XIII: The Pirate Volume XIV: The Fortunes of Nigel Volume XV: Peveril of The Peak Volume XVIII: Redgautnlet XIX: The Betrothed XX: The Talisman XXIII: Anne of Geierstein XXIV: Count Robert The Waverley novels are a long series by Sir Walter Scott. They remained popular and widely read for almost a century across Europe. Initially Scott did not publicly acknowledge his authorship, therefore the series takes its name from Waverley, the first novel in this serialisation. The subsequent novels listed the author as 'the author of Waverley'. Scott acknowledged his authorship in 1827. Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. His first novel was the first of the Waverley series, titled Waverley. Scott was primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Some rubbing to spines, particularly heads and tails. Volume XIV is lacking second spine label. Some cockling to cloth covered boards due to damp staining. Both hinges to volume XVIII are slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume XXIII is slightly strained but firm with the front endpapers separate from textblock, though still bound to pastedown. Internally, volumes VI, XIII, XIV, XIX and XXIV are firmly bound. Volumes XII, XV, XVIII, XX and XXIII are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright with some slight mould damage to first and last few pages, otherwise generally clean throughout. Very Good
