About This Item
Pavilion Books, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. A tight clean first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wrapper, n ot an ex-lib or book of the month copy. Since the body of St James was discovered at Compostela in the 9th century, the road along which pilgrims have trod for hundreds of years to visit his shrine has been immersed in history, both spiritual and social. In this book the author walks through France and Spain soaking up the spiritual atmosphere, sampling the food and wine, admiring the architectural styles and learning the legends. In the 12th century a French pilgrim, Amery Picaud of Poitou wrote a guide to the four major routes to Compostela. These four routes pass through some of the most beautiful cities of Europe, all of them enriched by the countless pilgrims who make their way through them. Following these routes, the author with the aid of photographs allows the reader to make this historic pilgrimage without ever leaving home.
