About This Item

Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1963. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. First edition of this novel about an African American Korean War veteran's experiences of violence while trying to exercise his right to vote in the segregated South. IF WE MUST DIE is Junius Edwards's first novel, expanded from his earlier short story "Liars Don't Qualify." Titled after the Claude McKay poem of the same name, IF WE MAY DIE presents the grim story of a Black man who returns home from the Korean War to violent racism in the US South. This is a scarce work; the Blockson Collection holds a later reprint, but not this first edition. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original red and tan cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Original unclipped ($2.95) pictorial dust jacket designed by Ellen Raskin. 138 pages. A few pencil marks throughout. Jacket with light edgewear, spine with mild sunning; a touch of foxing to verso. Binding with a bit of shelfwear, slight bowing of boards; a bit of foxing to edges. A sound, clean copy.
