A comprehensive first edition work which explains the structure and inner workings of Wellington's military system, in the original unclipped dust wrapper with illustrated plates and a folding map. First Edition. Part of the Oxford Historical Series, which was edited by V. H Galbraith, J. S. Watson, and R. B. Wernham. Illustrations include five illustrated plates and a folding map showing the 'theatre of operations' to the rear of text.This is a historical study of the Duke of Wellington's campaigns and his army, particularly in the peninsula. This work, written by Ward, explains the structure and operation of Wellington's command. Wellington adapted the existing military system in order to make it more effective against Napoleon. Chapters include 'The Administration of the Army in Peace and War', 'The Personal and Official Relationship at Headquarters', and 'The Quartering and Movement of the Army'. Also includes an appendix with various different figures and charts to rear. S. G. P. Ward (1917-2009) was a military historian who served in the British Army during World War IIWith institutional stamps to the front paste down and endpaper belonging to the Officer's Mess for the Royal Hampshire Regiment.Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. A bit of bumping and wear to the extremities and the head and tail of spine. Light spotting to text block. Institutional stamps to front paste down and endpaper, with offsetting to endpapers from dust wrapper. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with edge wear and chipping particularly to the spine region of wraps. Residue and age-toning left from what appears to be a sticker to the spine. Marks to wrap with spotting to front and reverse of wrap. Age-toning to margins of fly leaves and reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with age-toning to margins and a few spots particularly to the first and last few pages of text Very Good
