E-209: Harper & Brothers Publishers. Very Good. 1899. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Harper & Brothers, New York 1898. Viii, 209 pgs. Illustrated with thirty images by the author. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in green cloth boards with titles present to the spine and Thomas Hardy cipher present to the front board in gilt (The binding is uniform with the 17 volumes of Osgood, McIlvaines edition of the Wessex Novels. ). Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards are rubbed and worn with a chipped spine). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The first volume of verse by the author of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, and Far from the Madding Crowd - also notable for the inclusion of a frontispiece and thirty illustrations by Hardy. Includes poetry representing over 25 years of Hardy's work as a poet. Its publication seems to have been a turning point in his career as an author, as he published only poetry for the next 30 years. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
