A very fine, bright copy. SCARCE FINE AFRICANA. A comprehensive study of West Africa with an eye to its further social, economic, and political development and exploitation. Newland describes in detail the lay of the land including its flora and fauna; the “ethnology and psychology” of the native people, including their customs, language, and religion; its main commercial resources including mining and agriculture; and its administration and modes of transportation and commerce. There is an interesting appendix on “How to Live and What to Wear---Particulars of British Colonial Service.” The text covers British, French, Portuguese, and Spanish West Africa.
