About This Item
New York: Puck Magazine, 1881. Very good condition. Full page of cartoons caricaturing the changes at West Point that might be brought about by the deeply religious Union general who served as superintendent from 1881 - 1882. Oliver Otis Howard (1830 - 1909) was also appointed head of the Freedmen's Bureau in 1865, and in 1867 founded Howard University out of recognition of the opposition to the education of blacks in the south.
With 8 cartoons, the one at the center depicting the general clutching his "Revised Code" with a bureau full of angry freed slaves each holding signs demanding money. The other cartoons include Sunday Exercises, showing cadets singing hymns; the academy with a sign reading "West Point Moral Military Male Seminary"; The Graduate, showing a young man passing out religious tracts; pretty young women banished from Flirtation Walk; cannons draped with cloth, and with caption, "Ordnance must respect the Sabbath"; and two men in barber shop, with caption "The Only blood spilling under the New Rules". 10 x 13 1/2"
