About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1897. Cloth. Fair. 8vo. Publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and illustration on cover. Many maps and text illustrations throughout. 595 pp.
Both hinges overopened, and block is weakly attached to boards. Cloth covering spine coming loose. Ex-library with sticker on spine, and turn-of-the-century library card pocket inside front cover. Contents pages of front matter loose and laid in.
This is an uncommon history of American westward expansion written by prominent historian and librarian Winsor, who was the first president of the American Library Association. This volume is notable for its many excellent maps, and this copy's antique library markings are actually quite fascinating. (Howes W579).
