First American edition hardcover with dust jacket, published by Harcourt, 1971. A memoir by the author known for his 'Maigret' detective novels, and also for his 'Roman Durs' psychological fiction novels. Starts in June 1960, when he was 57, and ends in February 1962. The focus is on his thoughts on aging, the day-to-day work of writing and the process of publishing, and also his relationship with his family and children. 343 pages, with a section of photos. Sturdy red-orange cloth covered boards, with the author name and title imprinted on the spine in gold. Boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or creased. Jacket has some edge wear at the heel of the spine, and to the tips of the corners, a couple of small closed tears at the edges of the jacket, some light rubbing wear throughout. Jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Some age tanning spots to the first flyleaf page, and to the top edge of the text block. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. sewn binding is tight and square. Not a library discard copy. Attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory.
