First edition, first printing of Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, in first state dust jacket.. Oblong quarto, [38pp]. Illustrated boards, olive green cloth spine. Faint soiling to paper boards, internally clean. On title page, contains Library of Congress number 63-21253. Pictorial endpapers, bright boards and clean illustrated text. In the publisher's first issue dust jacket, $3.50 price on front flap, code "40-80 / 1163" on bottom of front flap, three paragraph blurb on front flap and no mention of the Caldecott Award. Pin holes on corners of flaps, where dust jacket was previously displayed, light sunning to spine and toning to white borders. A very good example of the true first state jacket. (Hanrahan A58).

Synopsis

Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children's picture book by American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, originally published by Harper & Row. The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short, a 1980 opera, and, in 2009, a live-action feature film adaptation. According to HarperCollins, the book has sold over 19 million copies worldwide as of 2008.
