NY: McGraw-Hill, 1971. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. 319pp. First edition. Translated by Michael Glenny. VG/VG-. Hardcover bound in textured red and black paper boards with gilt spine titles. Small area of abrasion at base of spine where a hint of bookboard can be seen, otherwise near fine. Unclipped $7.95 jacket has a small chip out at base of spine (corresponds to abrasion on book). 1/2" closed tear at top front tip. Red title text on spine lightly faded, top of spine shows light tattering. Closed scraped/tear along spine panel. Presents quite nicely in fresh mylar.
Synopsis
Set in Kiev during the Russian revolution White Guard tells a story about the war's effect on a middle-class family and was turned into a hugely successful play on publication. It brought the author overnight success and became 'a new Seagull' for the new generation, although it also received hostile reviews for the sympathetic portrayal of White officers. Paradoxically, The White Guard was one of Stalin's favorite plays. It was banned in 1929, reinstated in 1932 but published only in 1955.
