Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1904. First Edition. 160pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Dark green cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Gilt stamped image of the Whittier home on the front board. Better than very good. Inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf: "Ellen S. Bullfinch - with regards of Samuel T. Pickard - Whittier Home - Amesbury, Mass." Inscribed again on the front free endsheet by the former owner: "Lucy W. Sanderson, - from E.S.B. - on her birthday - Jan, 27 1918."
Mailed envelope laid in, that may be addressed by Whittier, to the Pickard family in Amesbury, Mass. At head of the front of the envelope: "This is Whittier's own hand - writing sent to me when I purchased this book for you by Mr. Sam T. Pickard. H.N.P.(?)" Postmark dated Ma(?) 24, 188(?).
Illustrated with maps, drawings and photographs, including a double-page photograph at the center, 'Scene in Garden at Whittier's Funeral.'
"This volume is designed to meet a call from tourists who are visiting the Whittier shrines at Haverhill and Amesbury in numbers that are increasing year by year. Besides describing the ancestral homestead and surroundings, and the home at Amesbury, an attempt is made to answer such questions as naturally arise in regard to the localities mentioned by Whittier in his ballads of the region....If any profit shall be derived from the sale of this book, it will be devoted to the preservation and care of the homes here described." - from the author's 'Preface.'.
